This week’s guest mix comes in the form of yet another running new series. When invited to contribute a mix to discrepant, Lowdjo had the excellent idea of doing a 7” only mix. We gladly obliged inadvertently giving birth to a new mix series here at discrepant HQ, the 7” Pinch.

By using only 7” from their collections, musicians/dj’s/producers/collectors are invited to contribute with their own musical vision of the 45rpm slammer. The aim is to celebrate such medium, dust off old classics and fire off new plates, all in the name of that mostly underrated shiny black spinner!

First in the series, the artist responsible for the concept, Lowdjo from Brussels, coherently takes us on a journey connecting the two very different worlds of vintage psychedelics with the more recent Glitch-hop tendencies!

Forget CDs, mp3 downloads and spotify...Surrender to the pinch of the 7"!

Funky Hot Biscuits

Hey all, it's time for another compilation of 45s I've been digging up recently. Actually, it's been more than a minute since the last one so I found a backlog of gems for ya. In part these were the northern soul and deep funk cuts I pulled out for Addenda's release show of the new JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound 7" on Friday (what a great show!). I also picked up some HOT records from Mark Prellburg on Sunday when Dr. Drase and I woke up early for an adventure up to Mt. Prospect. Wow! I snagged some killer garage from his boxes too so there's actually another comp that focuses on the stompers coming tomorrow. Watch for it.

C.K. Mann & His Carousel 7 - Funky Highlife

Lovely deep Afrobeat from Ghana's 70s Highlife period. First side is funkier and has been comp'd a few times but the second side is much softer; after several listens it really grabbed me. The record is a bit rough but there are no skips.

Roy Ayers Discography

When it rains it pours! In the recent spirit of mass collections of mp3s, here's a kind soul who has made nearly the entire Roy Ayers discography available through rapid share. Roy Ayers is a player who has gone from straight ahead jazz to sunshine funk and disco. My favorite album by him is Starbooty, one of the weirdest, funkiest 70s disco jams and a highly overlooked record. Snag it!

Godzilla vs. Ralph Records

I stumbled upon a collection of LPs from San Francisco based label Ralph Records, mostly recorded in the 80s and now out of print. They blew my mind. The record dealer claimed that he got them directly from the keyboardist of weirdo experimentalist band, The Residents. I put together a few tracks here that did excessive neuron damage to my brain. It's just a snippet of the later Ralph catalog but it reminds us that 1) electronic music is funky, 2) the 80s weren't as bad as everyone thinks, 3) triple pitch shift harmonics sound really nice, and 4) San Francisco is a freaky little town.

Ralph Records is still around today but I haven't caught up with what's getting released. Looks like a lot of live albums.
