All I Want For Christmas Are B-Sides

Like it or not, "Christmas" has become a musical genre. And as you probably know from last year, I'm sort of obsessed with digging up those phenomenal Christmas jams that never get played at the mall; the rarities, the one-offs, the throwaways — the b-sides. After another year of hard work, here is my mix for 2008:

This year I've been involved in a very important project called CHIRP, the Chicago Independent Radio Project. The project has come a long way and is run by a passionate group of volunteers ... but we still have a long way to go.

I'd like to ask you to help us close out 2008 by making a donation (click the donate button, middle-left). Any amount will help! We're in the process of building up the broadcast studio (located in the Lincoln Square neighborhood) and finalizing operation of our webcast which is scheduled to launch in the next few months. For anyone who makes a donation after reading this, I want to say thanks by sending you a private link to a special bonus track, the most soulful re-interpretation of Silent Night, ever, by Duke Pearson from a rare jazz LP released 1969 on Blue Note. Just send an email to kumar.mcmillan@gmail.com with the subject "CHIRP donation for ya."

Thanks everyone and have a groovy new year.
Yours, DJ Bylamplight

DJ Bylamplight Hosts RnB Flashback on WNUR 89.3 FM

Hey all, Eric Ricks invited me to host the RnB Flashback show yesterday, Sunday Dec 7th, 2008. Thanks Eric! It was a lot of fun. The term Rhythm And Blues describes a wide range of music but mostly was used to define gospel and blues influenced American soul and funk music from the 60s and 70s, the kind that makes you get up and dance.

I found out that I broke an FCC rule by plugging a commercial website on non-commercial radio: aintjustsoul.net (a hobby project of mine). Whoops! If it's any consolation, I am not currently making a profit on it ;)

RnB Flashback broadcasts every Sunday from 1:30 to 3pm CST (GMT-6) on WNUR, Chicago's Sound Experiment. However, the schedule may start to get a little weird due to sports season coming up.

Oh and by the way, I originally met Eric because he sells killer soul records.

Pugh - Ja, dä ä dä!

Edgy Swedish psyche / folk, ripped from LP: Pugh - Ja, dä ä dä!. Great album, goes all over the place. You might recognize the first 10 secs as a sample from DJ Shadow's Mutual Slump. LP is in high demand now (no thanks to Shadow! :)) so it took me a while to snag one. Enjoy!

Gabor Szabo - Spellbinder LP (MONO)

Excellent gypsy jazz on Impulse from the orig. Mono LP. Thanks for the rip, Geoffrey!
