Majestic Coal Chute No. 4

Hey all, happy Thanksgiving. Here's part four of the Majestic Coal Chute series, a collection I put together mostly from 45s nabbed down in Texas on a recent trip. Part one gets into some heavy, mindbending 70s psych, part two revs it up with some slamming 60s garage, part three again is screeching garage rock, and finally this last one cools it down with some off-center pop tunes from the 60s and 70s as well as some softer psych and folk numbers. Phew, that's nearly four hours of music. Download, press play, and enjoy the feast!

Future of the left - Travels with myself and another (2009)

Travels With Myself And Another, the second album from Welsh band Future of the Left opens with the searing “Arming Eritrea” and never lets up from there. It’s a furious, thundering collection of punk inspired rock, with often sardonic, mocking and profane lyrics frequently as abrasive and ferocious as the music itself, all of it sounding something like Ministry’s industrial noise with guitars instead of synths. However one chooses to classify it, nothing quite like Travels With Myself And Another has appeared this year. I can say without reservation that this is a great record that I’ve been listening to over and over since I got my hands on it. If your tastes run to indie folksy or chamber pop, then maybe this won’t be your cup of tea, but to all punk and hard rock fans, I say check this out. Standout cuts: “Arming Eritrea,” “The Hope That House Built,” “I Am Civil Service” and “You Need Satan More Than He Needs You.”

this is belgium (new beat mixes)

New Beat originated in Belgium and gained worldwide exposure briefly in the late nineteen eighties as all eyes in the worlds then fledgling dance community homed in to Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels. Characteristically New Beat tracks were between 95 bpm and 115 bpm. Tracks were often repetitive with heart stopping bass and explosive percussion.
Originally the style was started by accident as DJ Marc Grouls played the maxi version of "flesh" by A Split Second at 33rpm instead of 45rpm. Ronnie Harmsen (Fat Ronnie) was the originator when he then began to spin Maxi Singles at 33rpm instead of the stated 45rpm in several Antwerp clubs. People liked the slowed down versions and the scene was born. Influenced by this slowed down sound musicians started making records which were spun at clubs in the Belgian region. ...
Yet to this day this style is still not given any real praise from the dance community and has been ignored and virtually forgotten. No creative value has been placed on this music. Whereas you see classic acid nights and techno nights you seldom see any New Beat nights.
New Beat was the sound of Belgium between 1987 and 1990 and was at the cutting edge of creativity in electronic music at that time alongside the much lauded scenes in Detroit and Chicago. It holds a special place in in the minds of those who were touched by the sound. ...

Info from http://brainwashed.com/vvm/micro/benelux/

"Once we created New-Beat, we were a part of the DJ's who realised that Belgium is the centre of Europe's dance music. What we couldn't forsee was, that the name New-Beat would become one of the most misused names. At the moment 75% of the records brought out today have nothing to do with New-Beat, they only use the name for commercial and money purposes.

So we state once more, New-Beat is atmosphere, beats no lyrics, and sure as hell not commercial !!! " Marc Grouls and Olivier Pieters 1989.

Acid Fuzz Rock

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Woodstock, one of the most famous festivals for 60s psychedelic rock music. That was 1969, so what came next? Psychedelic rock went off in a few directions during the 70s.

One was towards proggy "jam sessions" fueled by who knows what (e.g. Grateful Dead, etc). I generally found that branch a little boring but prog music was still interesting because it broke down a lot of common rock structures. Next came the psychedelic metal: The Gun, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, etc. Another prog sound developed where heavily acid driven bands like The Flock started using horns, flutes, violins, and anything they could think of to sound more "out there." If you ignore the ridiculous circus song that for some reason was obligatory on every one of these band's LPs then this made for some pretty interesting landscapes: the kind of song where halfway through it you are no longer sure what time it is or what you've been doing for the past 20 minutes and you wonder why the room suddenly seems larger. Then there was the softer folk branch, the jazz and R&B crossovers, et cetera.

Here's a little comp I put together that samples a few different directions that psychedelic rock went in the late 60s and early 70s. Enjoy!

Egon Fisk - The unstablelist (acroplane.org)

Egon Fisk, son of a jazzy boogiewoogie playing bagpipebuilder, was born in Cologne and now lives in Belgium. Nowadays proud member of Umbrelladelika records, he also released on Angstprod records (FR), Acroplane (IR) and Roullette records (BE). A rollercoaster ride in IDM neverland, this guy's beats and synths sound picture perfect: extremely danceable funky multilayerd brainpoppin' electronics right from the future is what you'll get. A debut album for UBD is in the making.

This acroplane release is for me one of last years best IDM albums!

C.K. Mann & His Carousel 7 - Funky Highlife

Lovely deep Afrobeat from Ghana's 70s Highlife period. First side is funkier and has been comp'd a few times but the second side is much softer; after several listens it really grabbed me. The record is a bit rough but there are no skips.

MJ's Final Farewell

So long, Michael Jackson. The media has been going nuts over his death but, hey, it is a big deal. The dude could dance! Liquid Dilemma posted its own farewell tribute with a bag of tunes to go with it but I wanted to make sure you didn't miss some of the great tributes coming out of the wood works.

First off, in case you missed it on Liquid D, Mashit made a bumping version of ABC up against OPP, yeah you know that beat. Originally posted in 2007.

Next, my good friend Kid Did spent the last week paying homage by putting together a really smooth remix of MJ's beautiful and often overlooked tune from 2001, Butterflies. Check the Kid Did remix.

I found out on Twitter from the good people at Ghostly International that Doshhammer whipped up a lovely string piece out of the Rock With Me melody. It's also on Iron DJ's MJ tribute mix. Be sure to follow that link to catch Hype On Hype Vs Jackson 5 ‘I Want You Back’ (Dirty Dub Drop) and I Want You Back ( Z-Trip remix )!

Chicago's own Rhymefest put together a heartfelt tribute to the legendary and influential MJ, The Man In The Mirror. He actually did this in 2008.

Last but not least, this is what started it all: Big Boy, the first single and instant hit by The Jackson 5. It came out in 1968 on a little 45 on the Steel Town label in a sweet northern soul style. This was killing the airwaves around Gary and Chicago but never really blew up beyond that. Next was Motown and the rest is history. Check this excellent compilation to get the gritty pre-history, the lost tapes of Steel Town. If you ask me real nice like I might post a download of that comp :)

Dj C (ft. The Jackson5, Steven Marley, Naughty By Nature) - The ABC Traffic Jam (Armed With Harmony)

Michael Jackson, so long my friend

Michael Jackson passed away today at age 50 and I can't help but feel a huge loss. MJ shaped the music world we live in. Being a celebrity is a huge psychological burden but it's clear that he led a troubled life and went through a rough childhood. Unfortunately people are quick to judge him unfairly for this.

Who was the mysterious Michael Jackson who took the world by storm with his music?! He blew people away with his live performances, dance moves, and the infectious groove in his percussive vocal style. There's no denying it, stellar producers like Quincy Jones worked with Michael to produce some of the funkiest pop music EVER. Shamone!

With a career spanning five decades, what songs could possibly pay fair tribute to the King of Pop? I won't point out the obvious ones (you know what they are) but here are a few that I hold dear to my heart ...

Bad Trek, the bootleg mashup! Anytime I DJ this at a party, the crowd goes nuts (just sayin').

Never Can Say Goodbye (OPA), written by Clifton Davis and first performed by The Jackson 5, my favorite cover is this one by obscure 70s band OPA.

Billy Jean (Shinehead) Amazing vocal cover of Billie Jean that does fair justice to the original.

I Want You Back (Platinum Crew): Mission Impossible in a dancehall stylee? It works.

Smooth Criminal. Just listen to this song. It's insane.

Human Nature. Possibly the best song ever recorded by Michael Jackson.

Butterflies, 2001. I hear everyone talk about how Michael stopped making good music after Thriller. No he didn't!

Rest in peace my friend.
