2008 Grand Exits (hats off)

Wow, the world of music lost some amazing people in 2008. Here is a special nod to a few whose music I hold dear to my heart...

Bill Coday (May 10, 1942 - June 7, 2008). My pick: Sixty Minute Teaser, Part 1 and Part 2 on Crajon records.

Byron Lee (June 27, 1935 - November 4, 2008). My pick: Soul Ska. There is so much soul in this tune.

Alton Ellis (September 1, 1938 - October 10, 2008). My pick: Remember That Sunday b/w Sunday Gravy. Now that's rocksteady folks.

Cliff Nobles (1944 - October 12, 2008). My pick: Love Is All Right.

Larry Levine (May 8, 1928 - May 8, 2008). Producer of the amazing Pet Sounds.

Jimmy McGriff (April 3, 1936 - May 24, 2008). My pick: Electric Funk.

Isaac Hayes (August 20, 1942 - August 10, 2008). My pick: Hot Buttered Soul

DJ Mikey Dread (June 4, 1954 - March 15, 2008). Producer of Bankrobber by the Clash.

... you will all be missed and never forgotten.

Last step - 1961 (planet-mu)

Planet Mu
Released: Nov 2008
Catalogue Number: ZIQ220
LAST STEP - 1961, Planet Mu

Aaron Funk slips out of his Venetian Snares costume and into his Last Step outfit for an album of fractured acid and reorganised drum machine patterns for Planet Mu with a full length album following from his well recieved 12" debut. With opener 'My Home recordings' Funk strikes a moody chord with odd vocal samples, screwed acid lines and chopped live drums, before lunging into an acid attack sequence on '61 Disco' with an Aphex-in-Analord mode style panache. 'Haha Waffles' programmes a Luke Vibert-ish library records kitsch style with intriguing outcomes, and 'Surf Green' sounds like Squarepusher on a pure prog-melodic trip. The final run of three tracks are unusually produced at a massively reduced tempo (for Snares anyway) and allow the man to explore his complex skills in a different framework with strangely reflective results making for one of the oddest additions to his catalogue to date. The obvious touchpoints for this album would have to be classic Aphex, Vibert or 'Pusher or Paradinas and it ranks fairly highly among the crowd, IDM heads take notice!

Go back to 1961!

Surfing Lake Michigan

Did you know that people actually surf Lake Michigan? Me neither. Here's a little comp I put together after running into a record dealer from Michigan at the last Chicago record show. I picked up so many rare Michigan 45s off of him that I ran out of money and had to leave early! Here are the 60s Garage / Surf cuts for ya with some non-MI Garage killers mixed in for filler. Half of these tracks have been comped already and a couple even reissued but there are still some surprises in here. Enjoy! -DJ Bylamplight. (Psst, more garage here.)

All I Want For Christmas Are B-Sides

Like it or not, "Christmas" has become a musical genre. And as you probably know from last year, I'm sort of obsessed with digging up those phenomenal Christmas jams that never get played at the mall; the rarities, the one-offs, the throwaways — the b-sides. After another year of hard work, here is my mix for 2008:

Download All I Want For Christmas Are B-Sides (ZIP of MP3s)

This year I've been involved in a very important project called CHIRP, the Chicago Independent Radio Project. The project has come a long way and is run by a passionate group of volunteers ... but we still have a long way to go.

I'd like to ask you to help us close out 2008 by making a donation (click the donate button, middle-left). Any amount will help! We're in the process of building up the broadcast studio (located in the Lincoln Square neighborhood) and finalizing operation of our webcast which is scheduled to launch in the next few months. For anyone who makes a donation after reading this, I want to say thanks by sending you a private link to a special bonus track, the most soulful re-interpretation of Silent Night, ever, by Duke Pearson from a rare jazz LP released 1969 on Blue Note. Just send an email to kumar.mcmillan@gmail.com with the subject "CHIRP donation for ya."

Thanks everyone and have a groovy new year.

DJ Bylamplight Hosts RnB Flashback on WNUR 89.3 FM

Hey all, Eric Ricks invited me to host the RnB Flashback show yesterday, Sunday Dec 7th, 2008. Thanks Eric! It was a lot of fun. The term Rhythm And Blues describes a wide range of music but mostly was used to define gospel and blues influenced American soul and funk music from the 60s and 70s, the kind that makes you get up and dance.

I found out that I broke an FCC rule by plugging a commercial website on non-commercial radio: aintjustsoul.net (a hobby project of mine). Whoops! If it's any consolation, I am not currently making a profit on it ;)

RnB Flashback broadcasts every Sunday from 1:30 to 3pm CST (GMT-6) on WNUR, Chicago's Sound Experiment. However, the schedule may start to get a little weird due to sports season coming up.

Oh and by the way, I originally met Eric because he sells killer soul records.

Edgy Swedish psyche / folk, ripped from LP: Pugh - Ja, dä ä dä!. Great album, goes all over the place. You might recognize the first 10 secs as a sample from DJ Shadow's Mutual Slump. LP is in high demand now (no thanks to Shadow! :)) so it took me a while to snag one. Enjoy!

Stock sale impro by Lowdjo

The digital world has slowly been killing the record industry, while almost everybody has started downloading the last few years, including me, record sales went down in every musical genre.. so far i thought the more specialised scenes like the dj-world would always keep buying vinyl but i notice that even a lot of my 'active' friends in the dj world switched to digital. By this i mean ordering their 'dj-tools' in high-quality-digital-form, next to downloading unreleased tracks to use in their sets. By doing this, small and even big businesses get bankrupt and can't supply people like me with excellent, fresh and avantgardistic music..
On the other hand, the technological evolution created amazing machines that allows us, dj's, to use the digital formats like old and dusty Elvis Presley records and try to create the same atmosphere, only with endless possibilities and effects to manipulate the original sound.

This summer i went to a couple of stock sales in the 'record biz' of record stores that closed their doors and one big distributor in Belgium, Lowlands (article in dutch). Next to this big distributor their was my favourite record store in Brussels and definitely the most interesting one in Belgium, called Le Bonheur - "Epicerie Audiovisuelle". Unfortunately i won't be able to shop there anymore and supply you listeners with excerpts from this recordshop.. thankfully there's still something like mailorder!

So i got my hands on something like a 100 mint condition vinyls in different formats for half or less the original price and recorded this mix after listening once to each record.. here's a 80 minute-impro-recording of a couple of hours of listening pleasure, enjoy!

Theme To "Welcome Back America"

Dear World, we're back. America is back! And it never felt so good. Thank you for being patient with us. The truth is we've been waiting longer than 8 years for this. We've been waiting our whole lives.

America is a culturally diverse place -- our communities are deep and our voices are many. The movement that elected Barack Obama as our next president is about emerging from dark times to take back our country. It's about declaring peace as a virtue. It's about curbing financial greed and putting a little more responsibility and accountability on our citizens. It's about building a future for our children through education, health, conservation, and all the other liberties we've been missing out on. Most importantly, World, it's about renewing our citizenship on planet earth.

Words can't express the state of euphoria we're in over this! It kinda feels like the first time you get laid; your legs are shaky and you have a permanent smile on your face all day. To help you "feel" me, I put together this mix, special for you.

Yours, DJ Bylamplight

Hot Texas Vol. 1

Ah, yes, summer has come and gone and fall is in effect here in Chicago. I spent a little time in Texas this summer and of course made sure to dig for records while I was there. It's damn hot in Texas. And if you don't know, Texas — because of its proximity to the Gulf states — is one of the prime spots for finding 60s Funk and Soul (Houston for one had a lively Funk scene). Texas also had a few Garage scenes here and there, as did most places in the US during the 60s.

More importantly, Austin TX is home to some serious diggers who travel all over the US in search of records for their shops. Spots like Breakaway Records and Friends of Sound are just a few places I got lost in for hours, barely making a dent in the stacks. I also dug around San Antonio's Alamo Records and found a few bits and pieces. I'll upload some pics later on.

Here is the first compilation of heavy Garage and Rockabilly 45s I mostly found in TX. It's in a theme similar to the Turn On Your Lamplight boxset and even features a few TX locals: Roy Head and The Five Americans (maybe others?).

This is just the first of several Hot Texas compilations. The other ones will get more into the Funk and Soul so stay tuned. Track listing:

Move On Down -- Renaissance
Fortune Teller -- The Del-Rays
Rhythm & Greens -- The Shadows
Jump, Jive and Harmonize -- Thee Midniters (check out more reissues from Norton Records)
Thee Midnite Feeling -- Thee Midniters
Sweet Bacon -- Julian Covey and the Machine
A Little Bit Hurt -- Julian Covey and the Machine
Gonna Have A Good Time -- The Easybeats
Time Won't Let Me -- The Outsiders
Come Fill Your Cup -- Springwell
Like I Do -- The Del-Rays
No Communication -- The Five Americans
Death of an Angel -- The Kingsmen
Baby, Please Don't Go -- Them
Get Back -- Roy Head
Treat Her Right -- Roy Head & The Traits
Ramrod -- Duane Eddy His "Twangy" Guitar and the Rebels
Wing Ding -- Joey Dee & The Starlighters
The Green Mosquito -- The Tune Rockers
Rebel - 'Rouser -- Duane Eddy and His "Twangy" Guitar
Rotation -- Rotation
Amen -- Renaissance
The Walker -- Duane Eddy His "Twangy" Guitar and the Rebels

grab it!

Harry Poppins..

Hello all,
We've got a new contributor on the blog called Harry Poppins, horray!!!

To celebrate our new member we're posting something old and something new.

The first recording dates back to march 2007 when Lowdjo & Harry Poppins went back2back to close the party at the Planet µ-nite on the Biouel Boat in Brussels where they replaced Luke Vibert, who cancelled.
It's a live-recorded-mix that was streamed in real time on Radio Campus for them couch-potatoes.

The mix features a lot of records that were released on the Planet µ-label during the last couple of years, of course some dubstep since that was the theme of the night, some favela elektro and some crazy scratching... unfortunately there's no recording of the people shouting, every time we dropped a killer. You'll just have to imagine those background-noises while listening...

Other artists performing next to Harry & Low that night, were: Vex'd, Boxcutter, Loefah and Distance...

There were some technical difficulties in the beginning of this set but that won't spoil the fun!

The second post dates back to august 2008 when Harry & Low were fooling around with some tracks that will be released in the near future on Harry Poppins' own Umbrelladelika-label, these tracks haven't been mastered in the studio yet so if you would like these in higher quality you'll just have to order this compilation!

Next to Umbrelladelika-tracks, there's some electronix mashed into the mix..
